Is TMJ treatment Jupiter possible? If yes, how do you treat it? At present, nearly 10 million Americans are diagnosed with TMJ. Patients with TMJ often complain of pain in their jaw area. The pain can stem from one side or both sides of the jaw joints. Facial pain, chewing difficulty and nagging pain around the ear are also common complaints. The symptoms of this condition can resolve on its own even without treatment but if the symptoms continue your doctor may recommend treatment. There are three ways to address TMJ.
TMJ Treatment Jupiter Through Medications
Patients with TMJ are in pain. Most doctors prescribe painkillers and anti-inflammatory medications to address the pain. For tolerable pain, usually over-the-counter painkillers will suffice but if the pain persists, your doctor may recommend a stronger medication like ibuprofen. Antidepressants are also common. Example of such is amitriptyline but these are given in low doses and are prescribed to treat bruxism and pain. It’s also possible that your doctor will prescribe muscle relaxants to stop the spasms.
Treatment Through Therapies
Mouthguards and oral splints may also be used to treat TMJ as well as physical therapy. There are certain exercises that your physical therapist will teach you. These exercises are aimed to improve the muscles of your jaw. The application of ice and moist heat may also be used. Counseling is another form of treatment to teach you how to avoid factors that trigger jaw pain like grinding or clenching.
Treatment Through Surgeries
If pain medications and therapies do not work and the pain in your jaw continues to intensify, your doctor may recommend that you undergo surgery. The procedure done is called arthrocentesis where tiny needles are inserted into your jaw joint to irrigate fluid and to rid it with debris and other inflammatory byproducts.
